  • Essay / Security vs. Freedom - 773

Why is America taking such drastic measures, like installing full body scanners in airports? The truth is that America is prepared to do whatever it takes to protect the lives of Americans and their families. American bigots say the scanners violate their freedom of rights. However, these scanners have been prudently designed with customer privacy in mind by not giving them a hard drive, nor placing memory and data storage on them. America experienced 21 terrorist attacks, from 2000 to 2009, consisting mainly of Al-Qaeda and suicide bombers (infoplease.com). Osama bin Laden, leader of al-Qaeda attacks, is fed up with the way America treats the world. Blaming America for global warming and determined to stop it by sending suicide bombers and hijacking planes. After the September 11 attacks, America changed the way it thought about security, implementing: The Federalization of Airport Security Act of 2001: To deter and punish terrorist acts in the United States and the world, to improve law enforcement investigative tools (Library of Congress). More recently, America has decided to install full body scanners in airports to detect items hidden under clothing and is considering using the scanner as a primary source of customer screening. Body scanners take detailed images of the naked body, allowing security to see what's under the clothes. They will speed through security lines and find people carrying explosives without a pat-down or full body search. However, there is a downside to this lavish two hundred thousand dollar machine; he cannot see objects hidden in body cavities. Some rigid Americans think that having your photo taken in a public place by a stranger is humiliating and infringing...... middle of paper ...... look, without slowing down the line or disturbing the people lined up behind YOU . No thanks, I will avoid the hassle and embarrassment of metal detectors and possibly a pat-down by going through the full body scanner. I would prefer that a hidden person see my naked body, knowing that the hundred other people see nothing, not even my toenails. I believe the issue Americans should be concerned about is their safety and the safety of their loved ones. Simply put, if they had the option to show their naked body or die, I'm sure they would choose to show their naked body. So let's put together a compilation and consider what is important in life.
