Families of police officers often don't know what to expect once their loved ones join the police force. I Love a Cop is a good guide to help family members understand what their cop may be facing and how to handle certain situations that may arise. Kirschman walks you through your service, from an officer's first year through retirement. Since the book is primarily about a high-stress job, it can also be applied to other stressful and demanding careers. I even found some useful tips that could apply to my life. Kirschman is a clinical psychologist and consultant who works with law enforcement officers and their families. She is a member of the Psychological Services Subsection of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. In 2000, she was named a Woman of Distinction by police officers around the world. As part of her job, she attends family sessions for the families of new officers and dispatchers. She talks to them about the myths and realities of police work and the emotional risks associated with this work (Kirschman, 2007, p. 1-2). She believes that presenting a realistic vision of the future is one of the best antidotes to burnout and disappointment. His main goal of the keynote speeches and his book is to encourage families to act as a team and manage energetically; spillover between work and home (Kirschman, 2007. Pg3). According to the Goodreads website, she has been a police and public safety psychologist for over thirty years. She spends her time writing, teaching, and volunteering as a clinician at the West Coast Post Trauma Retreat for first responders.
