Essay / In On Liberty by John Stuart Mill - 1101
In On Liberty by John Stuart Mill, Mill discusses the differences between individual independence and social control. For Mill, individual independence means being able, to some extent, to make one's own decisions about how one wants to live one's life. Whereas social control is when someone who is in charge (e.g. the government) has to implement rules so that no one gets hurt. “The practical question of where to draw the line – how to make the appropriate adjustment between individual independence and social control – is a subject on which almost everything remains to be done” (Mill, 5). Mill believes that for humans to be happy throughout their lives, they need certain limits on individual independence and social control. He also believes that we can only have so many limits when it comes to individual independence and social control, otherwise we can't be happy and someone might get hurt. This essay will prove what can and cannot be used in individual independence and social control in order to live a happy life. A person might wonder why it is so important to care about the limits a person should have when it comes to individual independence and social control. . Mill thinks it's very important that someone knows this and here's why. If you want to be able to live a life that you want to control (and that should be ideal for everyone), then you need to worry about the limits that are placed on you. If there are certain things in life that control the way you want to live, wouldn't you want to prevent that? Mill believes that all humans falling into his categories should enjoy freedom. This is when you are given the right to do whatever you want in life. The category of people Mill is talking about when he talks about his limitations are civilized p...... middle of paper ...... married to gain freedom because they are educated, know its meaning and can fight to achieve it. rights in life. He believed that we should be allowed to have as much individual independence and social control as we want, as long as it harms no one. Works CitedMill, John Stuart. On Freedom. Ed.
