Social work is not only the basic practice of professional social work, but rather a common practice followed by all. The difference lies in the theoretical understanding and professional ethics, the practices involved in professional case work. Mary Richmond, in 1915, defined casework as “the art of doing different things for and with different people by cooperating with them to achieve at the same time their own betterment and that of society.” Social Case Work can also be defined as "an art in which knowledge of the science of human relations and relational skill are used to mobilize the capacities of the individual and the resources of the community appropriate for a better adjustment between the client and all or part of his or her total environment.”- S.BowersThe practice aims to reduce social problems and improve social functioning. An individual plays several roles in society. Problems can arise when there is conflict between roles or stress over a certain role that the individual is having difficulty handling.
