  • Essay / Importance of Nursing Informatics - 1273

In an increasingly modernized profession, the integration between informatics systems and patient care is becoming increasingly relevant to providing streamlined, quality care. Additionally, the nurse informatics plays a vital role in the relationship between information systems and patient care: “Nursing informatics professionals are the liaisons for successful interactions with technology in healthcare health” (Kelly, Brandon and Docherty, 2011, p. 155). Technology is paramount to providing optimal patient care and will continue to grow in importance, relevance and engagement; nursing informatics leaders are essential to guiding practice with technology (Bates & Wells, 2012). This is evident in the use of electronic medical records (EMR), the computer application that electronically stores patient health data; EMRs are an essential part of the transition to computerized documentation (Sheridan, 2012). Since 2004, the healthcare industry has moved toward improving efficiency and patient satisfaction, in part through the transition to electronic patient documentation (Sheridan, 2012). EMRs improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of care while reducing disparities in care coordination (Madison & Staggers, 2011).
