Essay / Symbolism In Inferno by Dan Brown - 1680
Italy is known for its architectural achievements, its magnificent arches and domes which have inspired and influenced the designs of many other countries. In Dan Brown's novel Inferno, the city of Venice is wonderfully depicted through Robert Langdin's encounters with the monuments, the character of the city, and the people. Dan Brown's knowledge of literature and history is vividly described, allowing us, the reader, to relive the emotions of each scene and bringing the book to life. The main places in Venice have been described in detail with metaphors and personifications. St. Mark's Basilica and Doge's Square mentioned in detail in the book are the main points of interest in Venice. As a tourist, one usually visits these historical places in Venice. Dan Brown uses a lot of imagery to describe the Byzantine architecture and Gothic style of these two destinations. It takes the reader on a journey through the history of Italy that makes the reader want to turn to these beautiful places and discover the global cultural city of Venice. Robert Langdon boards a train, the Frecciargento, bound for Venice, La Serenissima, and arrives at Gare Santa Lucie. On the train, he discusses Dante's medieval verses with Siena and Dr. Ferris: "Seek the perfidious doge of Venice who served the heads of horses...and tore out the bones of the blind" (275). These sentences allude to the city of Venice. where there is perhaps somewhere the grave of a doge. “The doges of Venice were similar to the dukes of other Italian city-states, and more than a hundred of them ruled Venice for a thousand years, beginning in 697 AD. Their lineage had ended at the end of the 18th century with The Conquest of Napoleon…” (276). The poem continues:...... middle of paper ......the 1860s became part of a new kingdom of Italy. Venice's architecture and buildings have resulted in conservation efforts that preserve a great atmosphere, but flooding and pollution remain a problem. Many films have been filmed in Venice, one of my favorites, The Italian Job. It is a city where people from all over the world come to have fun, enjoy each other and learn. Dante's Devil's Poem: "I am the Shadow" alludes to Hell through the use of the words "shadows" and "dolent city" where he will die and serve as a city for the extinction of humanity. It's ironic for me because Italy is the country of love. I believe Zobrist chose Italy as his main target for this reason. “Zobrist believed wholeheartedly in transhumanism: in the improvement of the species through technology; however, he also believed that our species would become extinct before we had the chance to do so.” (295).
