Tim displays signs of post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD throughout the film, which influences the choices he makes and the actions he takes throughout his life. Tim Thomas decided to radically change his life by giving everything he has to seven people, in order to save or improve their lives in order to "make up" for the seven lives lost due to his negligence. He gave part of his lungs to his brother, a piece of his liver to a social worker, a kidney to a hockey coach, his house to a mother of two, but he still had two more children to help. So he took his brother's credentials to the IRS and found Emily who needed a heart and Ezra who needed two eyes. He determined that both were good and deserving people, worthy of this gift.
