Guy de Maupassant, one of the best short story writers in French history, is popular for painting an appealing vision of French life in the 19th century. “Born August 5, 1850, he is considered one of the fathers of the modern short story as well as one of its finest practitioners” (American Literature). Maupassant began his career studying law before volunteering for the Franco-Prussian War in 1869. “After the war framed by Flaubert, Maupassant wrote one of the greatest stories, “Boule de Suif” (“Boule of fat") in 1880. which immediately distinguished the young writer" (History). Before dying in an insane asylum as a result of syphilis contracted when he was in his twenties, Maupassant left the world with major works such as Une vie (1883), Les Sœurs Rondoli (1884) and Le Horla (1887). In 1884, Maupassant published one of his greatest short stories: The Necklace. The main theme of the story is valuing human feelings and emotions and being content with what one already has rather than materialistic possessions. Mathilde Loisel, a beautiful and overly ambitious lady, is dissatisfied with her life and what she already has although she has been provided for. all the happiness of life. She is unhappy. The story begins by showing Mathilde Loisel's affection for her house which is old with worn walls, worn chairs and ugly objects. Culture appears in this story in the form of Mathilde Loisel's desire to be part of the upper class and the riches she wishes to possess (Laurie). Everyone who belongs to a lower class wants to move up to the higher class and live a comfortable life. The way Mathilde wants to represent herself during the invitation shows how we want to present ourselves in front of others with beautiful dresses and beautiful jewelry.
