Essay / You Must Rely on Yourself - 388
Depending on YourselfHave you ever heard someone tell you something, acted on what they said, and then discovered that what what he told you was false? This just goes to show that you should never trust someone else's word. I have always been told that attitude is everything. If you want to accomplish something, your attitude toward your goal is the most important factor in your success. However, my personal experiences say otherwise. In seventh grade physical education class, I had adopted the attitude that physical education was a waste of time and I was not motivated to actively exert effort in class. This continued throughout the year and my grade at the end was a “B”. The following year, I decided I had better change my ways. I made sure to show enthusiasm and effort throughout the year. My final grade this time? Another "B". It has always discouraged me from trying to get an A in PE because it seems like nothing you do can change your grade. Even if you change your attitude, the result may be the same. The need for autonomy becomes more and more obvious if you start looking for examples. For example, several of my friends had a certain professor for a physics class, who often made mistakes in his teachings, but did not want to admit his mistakes. They had to compare what he taught them with information found elsewhere, to ensure that he was not teaching the lessons incorrectly. Because of his mistakes, they had to rely on themselves and not on the teacher's word. My parents always tell me that if I don't want homework to be such a chore, I need to motivate myself. I followed their advice with an open mind and motivated myself for a history essay. But when it came time to write it, it was as bad as any other..
