Review of Quantitative Research ArticlesThe quantitative research article I chose to review was a study by Dougherty and Thompson (2009), found in Research in Nursing & Health. Very few researchers have focused their study on the impact of cardiac arrest and ICD implantation on a patient's intimate partner. What little is known about caregiver responsibilities and caregiver burden after cardiac illness or event previously focused on spouses' experiences following acute myocardial infarction or coronary artery bypass grafting (Dougherty and Thompson, 2009). The researchers in this article chose to study the effects on the physical and mental health of people's intimate partners after sudden cardiac arrest and receipt of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). Intimate partners were defined as the spouse, lover, or other relative living in the same household as the patient at study enrollment. Complete data collection was obtained from 100 intimate partners who participated in the study. Subjects were recruited from 10 hospitals in the Pacific Northwest after the patient received an ICD following cardiac arrest. The data was collected by the researchers between 1999 and 2002. Definition of Research and Type of Research The article reviewed definitely met the definition of research given by Knapp (1998). According to Knapp (1998), “research is an investigative activity whose goal is the advancement of knowledge” (p. 4). The article reviewed focused on physical functioning, psychological adjustment, personal health care utilization, and intimate partner relational impact after cardiac arrest and ICD implantation. From... middle of article...... learn about the effects of ICD implantation after cardiac arrest on intimate partners. More and more patients are surviving life-threatening illnesses and must be cared for at home by family members. For patients to regain good health and make a full recovery, the physical and psychological needs of the intimate partner caring for them must be met. Works CitedBurns, N. & Grove, SK (2009).
