  • Essay / Pro-choice or pro-life? - 1520

Pro-choice or pro-life? This is a question everyone asks about abortion. Is this really “killing” a baby when it is just an egg and nothing more? In this argument, the answer is pro-choice. “Across the world, wherever abortion is illegal and unsafe, committed people are taking enormous risks by clandestinely providing safe abortions to treat women with complications and to help women find safe providers” ( “Abortion”). Abortion was legally practiced in the United States until 1880. The legality of abortion is/was based on the status and political power of the woman. Abortion should remain legal and easily accessible to all women, because it will put them at ease mentally knowing that they have a choice, to show the world that they are equal to others and capable of make their own choices. (“Abortion”) There are many downsides to making abortion illegal. One reason is that if it is made illegal, many pregnant women will submit to dangerous and life-threatening abortions. In fact, in the United States, half of all pregnancies are intentional. Without abortion, what will happen to these mothers whose babies are not expected? There are 68,000 maternal deaths each year due to clandestine or illegal abortions. In addition, a woman dies every seven minutes worldwide following an unsafe abortion. “Before 1966, Romania allowed abortions and therefore maintained a very low maternal mortality rate. From 1966 to 1989, abortions were made illegal and maternal mortality increased tenfold compared to the rest of Europe” (“Abortion Statistics”). This quote proves that if abortion were legalized, the maternal mortality rate would decrease instead of increase over the years. (“Abortion”) Many women find themselves in the middle of paper. Instead of eliminating it completely, they should create rules and enforce them as much as possible. Abortion has its pros and cons, but everyone should be confident that women are capable of weighing each factor and choosing what is best. Abortion should remain legal and easily accessible to all women because it will put them at ease mentally knowing that they have a choice, to show the world that they are equal to others and that they are capable of make their own choices. This is a national issue that no one really seems to have control over. The government should never be able to make decisions for another's body, even if there is another body within it. If abortion were legalized, there would be fewer than 68,000 maternal deaths per year and more happy women. Overall, there is only one key element here: letting women choose.
