I. Introduction Property crime cases tend to fluctuate, particularly when the economy is in decline; however, a recently released report by the FBI claims that property crimes have declined based on averages compiled by reporting agencies for the first six months of 2013 (Minegar, 2014). Although the actual incidence of property crimes may have declined, the methods used to commit these crimes continue to evolve with advances in technology. Crimes like identity theft are regularly reported. Computer technology, the Internet, and jurisdictional boundaries each pose difficulties in identifying a person's intent to amass their wealth by stealing from others. This article will attempt to identify how taking possession is applicable in shoplifting cases, how security is trained to address these issues, explain what constitutes a home invasion, and why laws have been implemented to allow home invasion to be considered a crime distinct from other forms of theft or burglary, and to clarify the definition of cybercrime and how governments attempt to combat it.II. Shoplifting: Take Requirements and Safety Training “Shoplifting is the act of obtaining physical possession or control of the property of another (Gardner and Anderson, 2012, p.349). Retail or shoplifting has always been a problem for retailers. Shoplifting is defined as the concealment and/or unlawful taking of good offered for sale and an attempt to deprive the owner of said good, usually the retail trader, and possession of that good without paying for this one (Thomson Reuters, 2014).
