Essay / reading between the lines - 457
Reading between the linesMany times people take books for granted. They will sometimes prefer to watch a TV show or a movie rather than pick up a book and read it. Quite simply because it is easier and quicker to finish with a film than with a television show. And then, there are also those who read, but when you read, you shouldn't just read texts on books to get by. They need to be able to understand what is being said in the book, what point it is trying to get across. A few days ago I read an article written by Mortimer J. Adler. It was called “How to Mark a Book.” The article mentioned and explained how people should learn to read a book. Not just by reading the text, but by understanding what is mentioned, considering the author's point of view and the degree of importance the author places on the text. This is where reading between the lines comes in. A person must be able to recognize what he or she reads. If the individual reads the text and does not understand its meaning, then time has been wasted, as Adler mentions in his article. You have to learn to understand a book and what it's trying to convey, because the text carries a lot of emotion and people just don't seem to know that. This is why reading is essential not only to education but also to life. I completely agree with what Adler mentions in the article. If a person does not take notes on what they read, they are only processing the text in their mind and are not receiving the message that is the topic at hand. If one is able to understand the meaning of writing, one can not only develop better writing and communication skills but also gain experience. Understand that when reading a book, the reader must take time to take notes and understand what certain elements mean in order to fully perceive what is being mentioned. Therefore, one must read books more than once to be able to appreciate the book and use it wisely in one way or another in one's life..
