Essay / The Pain of Silence - 809
“Silence is the element in which great things are shaped. » - Thomas Carlyle said it best when he observed that within society, no one wants to be judged or seen differently, so silence was the best medicine for them; by withholding their true thoughts and emotions, they kept them safe. In Audre Lord's "The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action", Lord saw her life as an isolated darkness that she continued to endure just to escape the risks of being judged, misunderstood or even killed for speaking the truth . Audre's stance on silence strongly reflects Alfat Rifaat's writing "Another Night at the Club" about how silence affects the relationship between a husband and wife and the servant who works in their house. Audre Lord's story is about silence and the many harms that can happen. from there, creating a bridge that disconnects her from others and even from her inner self. She wants people to understand that this will only create obstacles in the future when their emotions are bottled up and nothing can be done if there is only one voice. She said, “Questioning or speaking out like I thought could have resulted in pain or death,” but it was something she wanted people to avoid; she wanted to fill the void created by silence and, in doing so, take the risk of being judged, misunderstood, bruised, killed or injured. Audre Lord wanted information and women's knowledge to be recognized and told, to make a difference in the lives of others. Being black, female and lesbian, she faced many obstacles, but the judgment in herself and taking on the transformation and responsibilities that her culture instilled in her gave her courage. Audre Lord's words are reflected in the situation of Alifat Rifaat's story "Anot...... middle of paper ......e herself from the same treatment she would have received if she had been in the servant's shoe. Keep her out of the public eye who would have misjudged her. At one point, the woman felt guilty for what she and her husband accused the servant of, but after her husband made the final decision, she was forced to swallow her thoughts and emotions, putting them down in a bottle and continue to smile and be happy like a woman should. In conclusion, we see that Audre Lord and Alifa Rifaat want to express their views on silence, communication problems and the pain it can cause when someone does nothing, such as husband and wife. There will always be consequences for what everyone has to say, but whether big or small, speaking and expressing a set of feelings will make it easier to understand and create better relationships with others..
