Essay / The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising - 531
One can only imagine the horrors that the Jewish community was forced to endure during the rise to power of Adolf Hitler and his relentless Nazi army. As Hitler's minions destroyed the Jews, no one would have ever thought that resistance was plausible, much less that it would actually occur. However, in just 28 days, the first ever German opposition took place in the Warsaw Ghetto in Poland and gave Jews a glimpse of the end of the long road that was the Holocaust. The Warsaw ghetto had more than 450,000 Jews living with its wall surrounding the streets and homes. Upon arrival, Jews were subject to disease, starvation, and constant torture at the hands of the Nazis. After only a few weeks, the head of the Jewish Council, Adam Czerniakaw, committed suicide in order to show his people not to conform to the harsh methods of the Nazis and to regain control of their own lives. Almost daily, Jews from the Warsaw Ghetto residents were herded into wagons and transferred to the Trebinka extermination camp, where more than 300,000 Warsaw residents were gassed and killed. Many tried to escape, but few succeeded. With only 60,000 survivors, most of whom were teenagers, they banded together and formed the Jewish Combat Organization (ZOB) and the Jewish Military Union (ZZW). Their goal? To fight against the “final liquidation” planned for January 18, 1943. Once the Germans became aware of the resistance that was forming, they withdrew to obtain reinforcements. The resistance has only grown stronger. Then, on April 19, 1943, the Germans again attacked the final liquidation. The resistance fighters dug into bunkers, launched rapid attacks and withdrew again.
