Essay / Compare and Contrast Achilles and Hector - 1159
Hector is above all a good person. He has his faults, like any other person who has ever lived, but it seems that his strengths outweigh his faults. Hector loves his wife and son more than himself. He was loyal to his wife and wanted the best for his son. He let them go and fight because he knew that was what he had to do for Troy (Homer 79). In today's world, people are not only looking for someone who is a great warrior, but also someone who is an overall good person. Hector is very courageous and reasonable. He is very courageous and will fight for his country whatever the cost. Hector does not act like a child in difficult situations like Achilles does, but he behaves like a mature man. Besides being a good person, Hector is also a great warrior on top of all that. The modern world needs someone it can look up to and who acts positively. Hector never turned against his own country like Achilles did when he wanted Zeus to side with the Trojan Horse (Homer 13). People of ancient times chose Achilles over Hector simply because Achilles is an exceptional warrior and is part god. Combat is what Achilles excels at, and at that time, it was really the only aspect that mattered. It doesn't matter that Achilles is selfish, stubborn and proud, as long as he knows how to fight well for his country. The Greeks were hurt by this, as Achilles didn't even end up fighting for his country until his best friend died. His stubbornness outweighed his greatness (Homer 178). Achilles was physically the greatest warrior, but he was far from the greatest.
