In the novel “Shane” by Jack Schaefer, Marian, Joe's wife and Bob's mother, is initially interpreted as a very simple character. She cooks, cleans and takes care of her family. She begins to develop a more complex character as Shane arrives. From the start, we sense that Marian wants to impress her guests with her cuisine and her curiosity for the latest fashions. But as the novel progresses, you begin to see that Marian may be expecting more from Shane than was initially shown. At the beginning of the story, Marian simply considers Shane a guest, she cooks and cleans for him and makes sure he is home. Yet from the start, she was attracted to him.
