  • Essay / The Grudge - 1067

The GrudgeThe Grudge is a beautiful horror film based in Japan. Many years ago, a family of three lived in this house: Kayoto, her husband, and their grandson, Toshio. Kayoto fell in love with Peter, her teacher and wrote a lot about him in her journal. When Toshio's father found out, he killed Kayoto and Toshio, then hanged himself. When they die, the curse is on the house and anyone who enters the house will be cursed and will eventually die. During the credits, the background is bright red, which symbolizes blood, and the credits fonts are dark blood letters. The words that appear are "death, fury and curse", which suggests that the film would be in the horror genre. At the same time, background music is played, a piano sound. This is effective because it tells the audience that the red background is related to blood. In the opening scene of the horror film, Peter is calmly standing on the balcony and suddenly jumps out. The director uses a tracking shot that leads to Peter. Then there is a close up of Peter's girlfriend when she is in shock, this is effective as it shows the emotions immediately. Meanwhile, broken chords play in the background to build tension. Then there was a tracking shot, to see Peter. In the background, broken strings play, the tempo increases. This is effective because it shows the audience how far Peter has fallen and builds suspense. This leaves the audience stunned and confused because Bill Pullman is a famous actor. The audience does not expect Bill Pullman to die so early in the film. The director uses this technique because it makes the audience want to watch. When Yokho enters the house, she talks to Emma and middle of paper......ve because the audience wants to know where the movie is. the phone is gone. They trace the sounds to where they discover the bodies of Matthew and his wife. They also make the grisly discovery of a human jawbone and wonder who it belongs to and where the rest of the body might be. When they find the jaw, the audience gets into the movie a lot more and wants to see what will happen next in the movie or will there be a part 2. This is an effective technique because it makes the audience want to to continue watching the film. film. The Grudge is by no means a great film, but it is an incredibly effective and stylishly horrifying film. Storytelling may not be this film's strong suit, but I also don't think whoever made this film was trying to make a masterpiece of modern storytelling - the point of "The Grudge " is to frighten, and in this he most certainly succeeds..
