Essay / The Stigma of Mental Illness - 1641
Corrigan argues that clinical diagnosis could exacerbate the stigma of mental illness. In Corrigan's study, the clinical diagnosis adds a group character to the group of people with mental illness, which worsens the level of prejudice (Corrigan 34). Corrigan argues that this ultimately leads to overgeneralization, because it is assumed that all individuals diagnosed with the same mental disorders behave in the same way (Corrigan 34). According to Corrigan, the stereotypical portrayal of mental illness gives the public the impression that people with a diagnosis are not likely to recover from these disorders, which can lead to pessimistic attitudes on the part of the public (Corrigan 35 ). Corrigan suggests that one solution is to understand diagnosis dimensionally rather than traditional categorical diagnosis (Corrigan 36). Another solution Corrigan suggests is for mental health providers to have one-on-one contact with people who have recovered from mental disorders as they live lives that challenge stigma (Corrigan 36). The final solution suggested by Corrigan is to replace assumptions of “poor prognosis with models of recovery” (Corrigan 37). Corrigan focuses primarily on the stigma of mental illness in independent living and working settings. One might wonder what influence mental illness stigma may have on academia, where the average age of those affected is younger than that of those working in the workplace.
