Essay / Urinetown Essay - 932
On a cold and crisp Tuesday evening, I attended the musical called Urinetown by Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis. Urinetown took place at Rowand-Johnson Hall, Marian Gallaway Theater. As I quickly entered the lobby, I noticed that people were wearing casual clothes. I gave my ticket to the usher and headed to my seat. This time my seat was located at the front, which gave me a great view of the stage. This particular theater is my favorite, it's very open and you can see it from every seat. This musical is known for being a musical that deals with different themes, unique text and extraordinary technical elements. The musical Urinetown started out very differently than other plays and dances I have attended this semester. As the lights began to dim, the audience slowly quieted and the sound of an orchestra amplified the room. When the narrator, known as “Cop” began to tell the story, I was immediately engaged and excited for the beginning of the musical. The main goal of this musical was to attract the attention of the audience by breaking out of the fictional reality of the show. Urinetown is based on your own personal experience of the humor, satire, and just plain mockery of this specific genre of music. Our society's social fantasy of selfishness, exploitation, environmentalism, and various political issues allows us to laugh at the "headache" of Urinetown. As we delve deeper into Urinetown, we need to consider major themes. The three most important themes are: corruption of authority, democracy and class systems. Each of these themes creates the storyline and all relate to each other. A good example of corruption of authority is when the poor stand in line, waiting... middle of paper... for a silk dress symbolizing a smooth, rich, youthful style. The sound design and choreography intensified the overall musical. They created the time, place and mood through rhythm and high energy. The actors had wireless headphones, behind the mics, attached to the mic pack, which amplified the sound, making it very clear. I could easily understand what they were talking about or singing about. In conclusion, Urinetown was a funny, engaging and entertaining musical. This is probably one of my favorite musicals of all time. The actors did a great job in portraying a realistic portrayal of the characters. The music was pleasant and you could move your head to the rhythm. The choreography was very unique and well organized. Each musical number was fun and attracted the audience's attention. I would recommend everyone in the community to come and watch this extravaganza performance..
