  • Essay / Effects on the Industrial Revolution - 679

The effects on society due to the Industrial Revolution varied from person to person. Working in this field varied depending on what you liked to do and what you needed to do. People who liked their job usually didn't have to do that job, but people who were forced to work didn't really like their job or just had a bad job overall. Although some might argue that industrialization has had mostly positive consequences for society because of the way America has shaped and changed everything to improve the way people work today, it has actually been negative for society. The negative effects of industrialization were poor working conditions, long and arduous hours, injuries, and even deaths that impacted society during this time. First, during the Industrial Revolution, poor working conditions were almost inevitable. Many people found themselves facing dangerous work and, on top of that, the way they worked was even worse. Even small children had to work in these terrible conditions. Children were forced to work where adults had difficulty working, mostly on things that were easier so that it wouldn't be too complicated where they couldn't do it or slow down production. People took photos to show how children worked in industries and factories. Lewis Hine was among those who took photos. In one of his photographs, he shows how children work on large machines, these children run around these factories barefoot and without protective equipment (Hine, 1908). Most of these kids work for money around machines that most parents today wouldn't let their 16 year old near. Many of these poor working conditions literally caused people to lose an arm or a leg! Because people were working on machines without safety equipment and getting their hand or arm caught in a belt... middle of paper... and dying or getting very sick. The long working hours caused people to be overworked and some committed suicide because they could not bear the stress of the long hours and being away from their families, which is also included in the loss of family stability. The industrial revolution did a lot of harm to society. and harm to working class citizens. People's lives were ruined and others ended because it was generally hard for people of that time. The citizens had hard times during this time and the people who lived and survived this time had a strong will to keep moving forward and just work. Not all jobs at that time were great, but for the majority of workers it was a really tough time.
