Essay / Literary Analysis Essay Hills Like White Elephants
Hemingway was able to show in his work the beauty of simplicity in his storytelling, to convey verbal and non-verbal communication. Hemingway uses a fair amount of symbolism in his story. He did this to illustrate two different meanings without having to explain every detail. He achieved his position as a spectator through the way he used symbols to represent things beyond the surface. For example, when the young girl spoke about white elephants, Hemingway used it as a symbol. (275). The white elephant represents something that no one wants to talk about, in this case it was the baby the girl is pregnant with. The author may not have said the exact words indicating that the girl was pregnant, but he subtly mentioned it when the man in the story used phrases like "it really is a terribly simple operation ” (276) and “just let the air in.” (277). It's a euphemism for abortion. Leaving air inside the uterus was one of the historical ways to terminate a pregnancy. The girl mentioned how the hills look like white elephants, but she changes her mind on that statement and says that's not the case.
