  • Essay / Nursing Theory: Patricia Benner's Novice to Expert Theory

As Davis and Maisano (2016) explain, “Dr. Patricia Benner introduced into nursing in 1982 how nurses develop their skills and understanding of patient care” (p. 13). The theory included five stages, namely novice, advanced beginner, proficient, proficient, and expert, which were used to assess progress in nursing skills and knowledge acquired as a nurse progressed through each stage. As Bulfone, Del Medico, Blasotti, and Bresadola (2014) argue, “the transition from one level to another occurs in three specific domains: knowledge, situation perception, and self-awareness” (p. 31). These three stages offer the nurse the possibility of moving from one stage to another according to Benner's theory.
