Jealousy, resentment, hatred, and ambition are just some of the common motivations that lead people to seek revenge on others. These villains will stop at nothing to see their victims suffer. Often, villains have no difficulty in achieving their ends simply because their victims must be of an innocent nature to suspect the nefarious intentions of their enemies. In this tragedy, Othello, Shakespeare created a villain who behaves in this way. Iago desires revenge at the expense of the reputation of others. He poisons his victims' minds to make a situation seem real and, in doing so, makes them believe a lie concocted by Iago. Due to the strength of Iago's evil intentions and the weakness provided by the innocent nature of his victims, he succeeds in using appearances as reality in a way that causes suffering for both the victim and the villains . Iago's hatred of Othello and Cassio drives him to seek revenge and he is able to succeed because his victims are "too innocent" to suspect him. Iago's relationship with the Moor seems to be a good and pleasant friendship full of love and care. Iago uses his kindness and generosity to let his victims think of him as their friend, when in reality he is simply using them to get what he wants. Iago is the kind of villain who has his friends close and his enemies closer. In this act, Othello addresses Iago as “honest Iago” (I.iii.292). Othello truly believes that Iago is an honest, trustworthy, and good friend, not knowing that Iago plans to deceive Othello. Othello being a noble soldier, his goodness makes him an easy target for Iago. Othello is “too innocent” to suspect Iago of being anything other than an honest man. As for Cassio, Iago manipulates him into believing that he is his friend...... middle of paper ......ntions when talking to Cassio. This makes Othello full of anger and jealousy towards Cassio and therefore he will not get his job back. Thus, continuing Iago's evil plan, Iago's vengeful hatred is responsible for the suffering and, in some cases, the tragic death of several innocent characters. Even though Iago's plot results in Othello's physical death, Othello manages to regain his former nobility at the end of his life. Iago's villainous plan ultimately results in his own deserved demise. One of the innocent characters who died was Desdemona, who never did wrong, constantly trying to please her husband and others.
