Today, many parents across the country are choosing to homeschool their children. A report from the U.S. Department of Education shows that approximately 1.5 million children were homeschooled in 2007 (Lips and Feinberg). This represents almost 3 percent of all school-aged children (Lips and Feinberg). A private researcher, the National Home Education Research Institute, estimates that 2.5 million children were homeschooled during the 2007-2008 school years (Lips and Feinberg). Regardless, homeschooling is experiencing tremendous growth every year. Parents have been teaching their children at home for centuries. During the 1970s, interest in homeschooling increased. Advocates have encountered much opposition when pushing for the legal right to educate their children at home and changing compulsory school attendance. The National Education Association has fought to place restrictions on homeschooling. However, most efforts have failed. As a result, homeschooling is legal in all states.
