  • Essay / Global warming: a natural cycle - 719

The main purpose of this text is to explain that the global warming trends that we hear so much about these days are in reality "part of a natural trend with a cycle that results in high climatic temperatures every 1,500 years” (Avery). It provides a historical record through ancient record keeping methods, geology and biology. The wine grapes were the most compelling part of the historical evidence for me. “People grow wine when and where they can. The Romans wrote that wine grapes and olive trees were gradually cultivated further north in Italy” (Avery). When looking at this evidence, it makes sense that we can track local climate change based on where we can grow the crops we are accustomed to. Changes in temperature and precipitation will all impact how crops grow and adaptations will need to be made to accommodate these changes. The geological evidence was also fascinating. The 1,500 year cycle is evident when we look at a variety of samples from many different sources. "Oxygen isotopes in the ice layers revealed the air ...
