The career I want to pursue when I go to college is in marine science. This career sparks my interests and matches my character style. As a child, I was intrigued by stories that took place in the ocean or along the beach. Sea creatures and native areas have always made me want to know more. Although the natural disasters were devastating, they also captured my attention. The college I chose is the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). I found it to be an affordable college choice and had the most academic benefit in my career choice to become a marine biologist. Although I did not participate in many marine aquatic activities, I still chose to seek a career to become a marine biologist. Founded in 1910 by the Governor of California, UCLA is a public research university that strives to “create, disseminate, preserve, and apply knowledge for the improvement of a global society” (UCLA). The university implemented the Advanced Research Project Agency Network (ARPANET), which later became the Global Internet. The National Research Council (NRC) reports that UCLA's academics rank among the top ten in the nation and yet are among the most affordable for college tuition. The cost of attending UCLA in-state for one year is $32,414, compared to $49,138 at Columbia University in New York. Focused on an optimistic approach, UCLA builds on past achievements and continues to bring new technologies and global advancements. The UCLA Marine Biology program is aimed at students who wish to specialize in the field of marine science.
