Of course, at that young age in my life, I had no knowledge of the ideology that gender is actually behaviors and attitudes shaped by socially defined roles and ideas, because at that time I viewed gender as simply boy or girl. Looking back on gender in middle school through my adult lens, I now notice how much of what I learned about stereotypes and dichotomies in Unit 2: POP was actually very present in my life when I was in college. I have always been very interested in science, but the stereotype that girls cannot succeed in science followed me from the age of 10. Through gender socialization at such a young age, different behaviors and attitudes have been encouraged and discouraged in boys and girls. The girls learned to play with their dolls and want to cook, which I took no interest in.
