Essay / The African Academic Achievement Gap...
IntroductionThe theme of the research is to discover why there is such a vast educational gap between minority students and Caucasian students. Many Americans are unaware that such an educational gap actually exists among today's students. This article informs us of alarming statistics, such as the fact that African American students represent the majority of the underachieving school population, although they only make up about 40% of the student population. It also details key events that contributed to the poor education minority children currently receive. For example, in the past it was illegal to educate African Americans, and when it became legal, black people were treated like second-class students. They were segregated from their white counterparts and given second-hand textbooks. This article also discusses other factors that have contributed to the poor education of minority students, such as moral principles, sociopolitical and economic statistics. Despite the passage of time, schools today are similar to those of the past. Minority children still find themselves in second-rate learning environments while white students enjoy the comforts of first-rate school buildings and textbooks. In summary, the theme of this article was to call attention to the educational gap between African American, Latino, Asian, and other non-White students. As an African American man, I have faced inequality and judgment from individuals who have no idea. what kind of person I really am. Growing up, I received a poor education, which led me to not do well in many of my college courses. It has come to my attention that other students of color are currently experiencing and receiving the same inadequate learning environment and teaching... middle of paper ... then black environments. Minority students are overrepresented in special education programs. As an African American, I will need to prepare for my future as an educator. When I become a teacher, I may encounter a student who is struggling to keep up with their peers. I need to know if this student is a slow learner or a victim of the achievement gap. This research taught me about the factors that disproportionately affected African American, Latino, Asian, and other non-white students. I will use this information to contribute to both my future research and career.
