The Problems of Too Much Fat in the Body[IMAGE][IMAGE]Fats are compounds called triglycerides, formed by a condensation reaction between glycerol and usually 3 fatty acids (the bond is called ester bond). The molecule is quite large and has long hydrocarbon tails. If each carbon atom is connected by a single CC bond then we say it is SATURATED, if there is a C=C double carbon bond then we say it is unsaturated.[IMAGE]A chain with many C=C bonds is polyunsaturated. Most animal fats are saturated fats while most plant fats are unsaturated. Polyunsaturated fats found in vegetable oils are considered good fats. Saturated fats, most abundant in animal products like meat and milk, are considered bad. Fats are essential as an energy store, for insulation and for membrane production, buoyancy, hormone production, but too much fat can have serious effects. One of the biggest problems by far is heart disease and heart attacks, two of the biggest causes of death in the UK. Heart attacks are often common in obese people who have eaten too much fat without regular exercise, that is, overweight or obese. When you eat more fat-containing products and don't exercise, fat builds up in the arteries, which can cause high blood pressure. Fat sticks in and around the arteries causing the space inside the artery to become smaller, blood has to be pushed through a smaller space and your heart has to work harder and blood pressure increase. Fat accumulated in the arteries can also cause heart attacks. . The fat blocks important arteries such as the coronary arteries and the heart becomes submerged in a layer of fat. When the coronary arteries are blocked by fat, the consequences are very serious. The coronary arteries provide the heart with all the nutrients and fresh oxygen it needs to function properly. As the coronary arteries become increasingly blocked by sticky fatty deposits, less oxygen enters the heart and suddenly stops and the patient suffers a heart attack..
