  • Essay / Defining Oppositional Defiant Disorder - 2419

IntroductionThe reason I wrote this article is to know what Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is and its effect on age, gender and concurrent behaviors (comorbidity) such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorder (CD). How these conditions are affected to get the proper diagnosis and treatment of ODD. Loeber, Burke, and Pardini reported in clinical groups in children that ODD is listed as one of the most well-known behavioral disorders (cited in Kazdin, 1995). Stringaris and Goodman (2009) found that ODD is apparently very prominent in adolescents due to its strong association with a wide range of fully developed mental health disorders such as (cited by Kim-Cohen et al., 2003, Nock , Kazdin, Hiripi, & Kessler, 2007) conduct disorder (CD) and introverted disorder (cited by Burke, Loeber, Lahey, & Rathouz, 2005; Costello, Mustillo, Erkanli, Keeler, & Angold, 2003; Ford, Goodman, & Meltzer, 2003).What is oppositional defiant disorder?I will start by defining ODD. My first step is to take the name apart and put it back together with a definition in its simplest form. I will use http://dictionary.reference.com/ as a reference: Oppositional means the action of going against, being in conflict, defying, or not cooperating. It also has the definition: a person or group of people who stands firm, shows disapproval or condemns something, someone or another group. The AACAP (2006) stated that from time to time, children are rebellious, especially if they are drained of energy, lacking in food, or simply stressed. The next word is provocateur, which means boldly resistant or defiant. Finally, the word disorder designates a disruption of physical or mental undertakings; problems...... middle of paper ...... and children. Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 51 (1), 23-30.
