  • Essay / South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) Dietetics Intern Position...

I am very interested in pursuing a Dietetics Intern position at the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC). I am confident that this internship will provide me with a wide variety of hands-on training in all aspects of the dietetics field, which are necessary to successfully achieve my career goals as a Registered Dietitian (RD). Currently, I work as community nutritionist for Kapiolani Medical Center's Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) for over a year and a half. My job responsibilities in the office include determining client eligibility, assessing nutritional health risks, and presenting nutrition education activities and materials to clients. Although initial nutrition education of high-risk clients is typically the responsibility of a dietitian, I am very involved in health education with a diversity of clients. At the WIC office, I had the opportunity to work closely with former SCDHEC intern Cassie Zumalt, RD, who highly recommended your program to me. She has been a great mentor and friend to me with her high standards of professionalism, strong work ethic and encouragement to explore other career developments, which strongly motivated me to join a part of your team. My particular interest has always been in the prevention of chronic diseases such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, obesity and certain types of cancer, because I believe that many of these conditions can be avoided by modifying the Lifestyle factors, such as a healthy diet and moderate physical activity. While living in Japan, I recognized that people's common dietary practices were... middle of article...... allowing me to better understand American culture, academic and medical trends if I I have the opportunity. I believe this program will help me learn more about how to impact community health and how to best serve a diversity of patients and discover new professional Internets. I am also fascinated by your Guardian Angel program and the pre-dietetics courses for future interns. I think these support systems are really helpful for trainees to achieve their goals of becoming a dietitian. With my professional, volunteer, and cultural experiences as well as my success in academic courses, I believe I am well qualified according to SCDHEC admissions standards. I look forward to expanding my knowledge and experience by working and contributing to your team as well. Thank you for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you.
