IntroductionFranz Cumont's introduction to Astrology and Religion Among The Greek andRomans, the 1960 Dover edition of the original work complete and unchanged published by GP Putnam in 1912, is aimed at the general historical and theological public. Reading Franz Cumont's introduction, it is evident that he is scathing in his comments regarding the practice of astrology. Alongside his disdain for the continued growth of belief in astrology and the way in which, across humanity, intellects, academics and ordinary people continue to be interested in it.1 It may be objected that Franz Cumont is outdated with his thoughts on the decline of astrology. He refers to the scientific discovery of the heliocentric theory which, according to him, rendered useless and meaningless all astrological calculations, discoveries and influences prior to this discovery.2 It will also be argued that Babylonian astrology and astral mathematics were considered important in academia before its introduction. to ancient Greek intellects. Critical Analysis Cumont states that the scientific discovery of the heliocentric theory was responsible for the collapse of the power of astrology. The fact that the Earth rotates in space and is not the center of the universe, as was believed with geocentric theory, Cumont suggests, does not give astrology any respectability. The "planetary influences no longer made their prophetic voices audible to humanity", which, according to Cumont, was the decline of astrology.3 Keith Thomas, author of Religion And The Decline Of Magic, discusses the decline in the status of astrology towards the end of the 17th century.
