Essay / Steve McQueen - 2098
Steve McQueen is a British artist and filmmaker. Born in London, England in 1969, he grew up in West London and attended Drayton Manor High School. Before starting his career, McQueen was a football player and was a member of the St. Georges Colts football team. It was after his brief stint as a footballer that he became interested in the arts. Started studying at Hammersmith and West London College to complete an A level in art. He then began studying art and design at Chelsea College of Art and Design, then fine art at Goldsmiths College; it was here that he sparked an interest in cinema. In 1993, before starting his career, McQueen left Goldsmiths College to attend the Tisch School in New York, which did not last long, as he found they were not experimental enough for him. After his long studies, he immediately began his dissidence in cinema and installation. , starting in 1993 with his first major silent film Bear. He only began working with sound in his films in 1998, when he filmed Drumroll. McQueen also directed a major feature film titled Hunger, which debuted in 2008. In between his directing work, McQueen ventured into installation, and in 2007 he created an installation titled Queen and Country, which sparked a big controversy. McQueen's films were and still are considered installations within a gallery, because while being films, they are nevertheless considered works of art. Not only does he use his films to create artistic performances and show his viewers that cinema can be considered an art form, but he also focuses on the formal elements of film. Some of the elements it focuses on are point of view, framing, camera movement, speed, and lighting. Thus, when the spectator watches the films, he is not only caught in the middle of a paper, distressing that he cannot help but be attracted by the film and is afraid to even look away if he feels he should do so. . This creates a range of emotions both positive and negative. This film shows how McQueen works with all his works of art, whether it's politics and war or performance art. It doesn't seem to leave the audience unsatisfied, in fact, it seems like they are either wanting more or have just had enough. Each of his pieces starts from an inspiration and a thought, then transforms into a simple idea and pushed to its limits. This is what makes him a complete artist, able to juggle different genres in the art world and find a balance between them. Steve McQueen did what many have struggled with for years and still strive for today: he didn't just talk about doing something, he actually went out and did it.
