Burrhus Frederic Skinner, also known as B.F. Skinner, was one of the most respected and influential psychologists of the 20th century. Growing up in a rural area of Pennsylvania with a population of about two thousand, Skinner and his brother Edward were forced to use their imaginations to entertain themselves. From a young age, Skinner loved school. After graduation, he attended Hamilton College in New York where he earned a bachelor's degree in English literature. After graduating, he attended Harvard where he would earn his doctorate. and invented the “Skinner Box”, and began his experimental science in the study of behavior. He called his study “radical” behaviorism. After college, he would marry and have two children. In 1990, he met his destiny when he was diagnosed and ultimately died of leukemia. Skinner was born March 20, 1904, in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania. His mother, Grace Skinner, was an intelligent and strong housewife who left her job as a typist after Skinner's birth and became a housewife. His father, William Skinner, was a local attorney in Susquehanna. Skinner's parents raised him in an old-fashioned, hard-working home. Two years after Skinner's birth, his brother Edward Skinner was born. The Skinner brothers kept themselves out of trouble in the railroad town of two thousand people by experimenting with building things from makeshift materials. A few items the boys built were a cabin in the woods and a wagon with a steering wheel in the opposite direction. Skinner would use these skills later in his life. Skinner also occupied his time writing short stories and novels. Behavior modification is a fairly simple concept in which negative reinforcement is removed and replaced with desirable reinforcement in order to achieve the desired behavior. This type of modification has been used in the treatment of many pathologies such as addictions, autism and many other psychological problems. The idea of the symbolic economy is used in psychiatric institutes as well as in centers for juveniles by rewarding good behavior. The institution establishes a certain set of rules, and if they are followed accordingly, the subject is rewarded for it. However, if the subject misbehaves, the tokens will be forfeited. These tokens can serve as any type of "currency" for the subject, and can be exchanged for anything they desire, such as candy, cigarettes, or any other available item...
