“Self-development is a lifelong process” (Brym and Lie, 1978: 69). Self-socialization involves choosing socialization influences from the wide variety of mass media offerings (Brym and Lie 2012: 67). Mass media in today's generation has a huge impact in terms of communication, conveying a message, knowing what is good and what is not. Self-socialization and mass media can create a very strong bond that makes people believe that what they need in their lives will be learned through media alone. When I was 10 years old, I started to get interested in foreign modeling. I started dressing, walking and talking the same way I saw on TV and in magazines. This influenced me to forge my identity in the Western field of modeling and stand out as an individual. However, my parents were not happy with the idea of following Western modeling trends, they preferred me to join the Indian modeling industry where it was easy to enter but not very rewarding. I chose to develop myself to a higher status where my talents could be more attractive and more successful. With my example, I think conflict theory fits best because it addresses “submission and struggle between people of high and low social standing” (Brym and Lie 2012: 12). Additionally, it can also be linked to the feminist approach when gender roles play an important role as they are "widely shared expectations about how men and women are supposed to act" (Brym and Lie 2012: 67). The feminist approach in India made me realize that my dreams were not acceptable since the country is not developed and considered the “third world”. Mass media conflict theory reflects "how members of privileged groups attempt to maintain their advantages while ...... middle of paper ...... appropriate in the society in which we live, however , if we look at the bright side of what the media tries to portray, we can achieve their goals, the same way I achieved them. In conclusion, the process of creating one's identity can lead to drastic changes in life. Yet, we overcome all obstacles and face them fearlessly to achieve our dreams. We use self-socialization constantly in our daily lives and we can sometimes be tricked or informed by the media, but it is the first step to developing a norm where everyone's beliefs come together. My modeling experience helped me understand what I really wanted in life, and in doing so, I learned different ways to achieve it. Therefore, sociological imagination helps me realize that media can influence both macro and micro structures, but when family supports you, you can overcome obstacles in any life situation..
