  • Essay / Demographic Trends in Population Aging - 2510

The U.S. population is aging rapidly. The population of older Americans is currently projected to reach an all-time high by 2030, with people over the age of 65 accounting for 20% of the U.S. population (Hoyer & Roodin, 2009). Over the next 40 years, the Administration on Aging further projects that the population aged 65 and over will be twice as high as it is now, and the number of people aged 85 and more will be three times higher than today. Current demographic trends from the Administration on Aging (AoA) project that approximately 35 million Americans, or one in eight, are age 65 or older, and three in five are women. Given the continued decline in birth rates and increasing old age rates, there is a shortage of resources throughout the aging life course. This point is illustrated by US Census Bureau data on birth rates; who found a change in the dependency ratio by age. In 2000, according to the United States Census Bureau, the number of children (ages 0 to 17) per 100 people in the adult population (ages 18 to 64) was 42, a decline from to the 51 in 1950. Furthermore, largely due to the size of the baby boomer cohorts, combined with advanced medical technology, the number of people aged 65 and over was 36 per 100 people, compared to just 13 elderly people of the same age per 100 people in 1950 (Wilmoth & Longino, Jr.). The AoA average life expectancy at birth is currently 79.4 years for women and 73.9 years for men. Figures projected by the AoA show that by 2040, for every 100 men aged 65 and over there will be 127 women and for every 100 men aged 85 and over there will be 168 women. This proportional difference is largely due to life expectancy. On average, women live about halfway through...... they remain homemakers, mothers and caregivers. Assumptions about what is or is not “women’s work” must be abandoned at all costs. Policing of images of women, aging, the workforce and family life must become less stereotypical and negative. They also need to become more gender neutral in everyday messages, as more opportunities are now open to women and women. take care of family members and/or have a family? What measures can be effectively implemented to ensure equal pay for women compared to men and for minorities compared to the rest of the population? How can socially constructed ideas about gender roles be changed so that women are not penalized or ostracized for not marrying or having children ??
