  • Essay / Personal Statement: A Personal Philosophy of Leadership

In a high school mock trial, as team captain, my team placed in the top ten out of 180 teams four years in a row. I coached my little brother's team on mock trials, and they placed first in middle school and fourth in high school last year. My section in the band was the only section completely memorized for the first marching band show of the year under my direction. My sisterhood makes it harder for me to see my contributions. I grew up knowing how businesses are run and how people are supposed to be secretive about certain things. However, when you work in an organization where people feel that not being fully transparent amounts to corruption, it's difficult to be a leader. Leaders have to hide certain information because if everyone heard it, they would be discouraged. I contribute because I live the values of my sorority. I care so much about my sisters and my organization that I will do anything to make sure we are the best we can be. I helped implement a new points system that still uses fines, so members attend mandatory functions, and rewards members for participating in the events we work hard to create. I talk about my sorority in a positive way so that people recognize the great work we do in our philanthropies. By doing this, I feel like I'm earning the respect of my peers and doing the best job possible. I hope I can help make my sorority more visible, and I want to become president more than anything right now because I believe I follow our values more than anyone.
