Essay / Motivation Issues in the Workplace - 1093
Motivation Issues in the WorkplaceFor an organization to be successful, it must find creative ways to keep employees motivated. This also means that the organization must clearly understand how and what motivates employees and how to go about accomplishing the task to keep employees motivated. Managers have many forms of motivation theories that they can use. One option that I consider appropriate for my current work environment is Adams' Equity Theory. This theory notes that employees need balance and fairness in their inputs and outputs to be satisfied in their workplace. Equity theory is based on the notion that people want to be treated equally and fairly compared to everyone else in their workplace. Problem StatementThere are 160 of our posts nationwide; all positions are located in our current office. Our primary job is to prevent veterans from committing suicide 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All employees were required to have a psychology social worker degree to be able to respond to suicide. Employees often express that they feel privileged and proud to have this position because it is very rewarding as a mental health therapist. This position also comes with great benefits and fairly distributed compensation among all. However, this position only has one level of upward mobility, namely promotion to management. This opportunity presents itself quite often as programs continue to grow and expand. We are now also evaluating drug addicted and homeless veterans, in less than a year. Most employees have a goal of being promoted to management. However, it is... middle of paper ... an employee outcome that leads to employee dissatisfaction, increased conflict, and high turnover in the organization. Equity theory is a perfect model of motivation that “explains how people strive to achieve fairness and justice in social exchanges or give-and-take relationships.” (Kinicki, A. and Kreitner, R. (2009). Motivating and making changes using equity theory creates the following: • High productivity. • Promoting quality work. ., & Kreitner, R. (2009).
