  • Essay / Spirited Away - 1154

Human beings are fascinated by heroes. Joseph Campbell believes that throughout history, heroes have followed the pattern of a hero's journey or monomyth. This means that there are common patterns found in many hero stories. Time and time again, people have heard of heroes leaving the ordinary world to complete the quest that will change humanity and improve the hero. Even though many tasks and challenges may present themselves to the hero, he always comes away victorious. The hero fulfills a double objective. Heroes are smart, courageous and resilient. They show the world what is possible through hard work and perseverance. Heroes also reflect the fears and limitations people face. Heros inspires people to become the best version of themselves. Chihiro, the main character of Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away, is no exception. The story begins in the ordinary world with Chihiro and her family moving to a new house. Chihiro is intimidated by the prospect of starting her life again. Which makes her a whiny, selfish and fearful little girl. All that changes when she and her parents visit an abandoned theme park and accidentally cross into the spirit world. This is where she meets Haku, outside a bathhouse. The young boy informs her of their entry into the spirit world and tries to bring her back to his world. But it is too late, in their gross ignorance, his parents have already eaten of a feast intended for the spirits and they are transformed into pigs as punishment. Chihiro, 10 years old, now finds herself alone in the spirit world. This is what Joseph Campbell calls “the call to adventure.” She has been transported out of the ordinary world and is now tasked with saving her parents in this new and strange world. Chihiro is scared... middle of paper... help her see that her old life isn't as scary as she once thought. Chihiro returns home transformed, better equipped to live in the ordinary world. Chihiro's character may not be a likely hero, but she is a heroine nonetheless. Spirited Away is a good example of Joseph Campbell's hero's journey model. She is transported to a new world where she is challenged and tested. During her journey, she helps heal a river spirit, saves No Face's bathhouse, and saves Haku's life. In the end, she saves her parents and returns them to their ordinary lives. She learns to be strong and courageous. Despite all her flaws, Chihiro grows as a person and discovers that she is more capable and powerful than she could have ever imagined. It reflects that fear and doubt in all of us and shows us that even the most fearful person can rise to the occasion and be a hero...
