Great Expectations was a novel written by Charles Dickens. It was first published as a serial beginning on December 1, 1860, and then as a book in August 1861, although it had already been published by David Copperfield in 1849. This novel reworks his own childhood as a first person narrative; Dickens had the good fortune and advantage of writing Great Expectations because he lived in the Victorian era, and he recounted his life experiences with the play's main character, "Pip." Charles opened the play with the character of Pip; his name was an abbreviation of his first name Philip. In the Victorian era, there were 3 different classes: upper class, middle class and lower class. Pip was working class, as was Charles at that time. This class was very unhappy in the Victorian era; men had to work long hours throughout the day in a factory or as a blacksmith while earning only a tiny amount of money.
