  • Essay / Analysis on Eveline by James Joyce - 834

“Escape! She must escape! but why she didn't (Meyer 515). James Joyce's main character in "Eveline" had every reason in the world to escape his strange life and explore a new life. She fears changing her life by moving to Buenos Aires with her boyfriend Frank. Eveline becomes the main support for her dysfunctional family after her mother's death and must make the biggest decision of her life: stay or run. The guilt that Eveline will feel will force her to stay in her horrible trap. James illustrates in the short story "Eveline" that his character did not leave her dark life for two reasons: Eveline promised her mother that she would take care of the family and she does not know or love Frank enough to leave. James Joyce was born on February 2, 1882 in Dublin, Ireland. He attended private Jesuit schools and graduated from University College Dublin in 1902 with a degree in modern languages. After university, he went to Paris to study medicine but decided to write instead. He returns home to care for his ill mother and begins a relationship with Nora Barnacle in the early 1900s; they married in 1931. After the marriage, they returned to Europe where he completed the Dubliners. Joyce submits his work to the English publisher Grant Richards. Richard declared the stories too controversial and published them nine years later. Joyce also published Chamber Music, Ulysses (1907), A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916), and Finnegan's Wake (1939) (Meyer 512). Joyce influences the way fiction is written in the 20th century. He died on January 13, 1941 after moving to France during World War II.
