The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is one of the most read novels in American literature. The book was written in the late 1860s, at the end of the Civil War. It was a tumultuous time for America. The segregation law was passed and racism was at its peak. Mark Twain primarily wrote the novel to take "a twelve-year-old boy and guide him through his life (in the first person)." (ClifNotes, 10) But slowly, the enthusiasm over the escape of slaves began to fade from Mark Twain, so he stopped writing the book. But later he took up his pen to write about a white boy, named Huck Finn, and introduced him to the reading world with the phrase: "You don't know anything about me without reading a book called The Adventure of Tom. Sawyer, but it doesn't matter. (Twain, 1) Then the epic novel continues as Huck joins Tom Sawyer's so-called gang of thieves and pirates. But the story turns when his father Pap Finn arrives in town. Pap, violent and drunk, threatens Huck to leave school but Huck goes to school just to make him angry. Pap becomes furious and kidnaps Huck from a small river in Mississippi. Despite the comfort of the absence of school or religion, he longs to free himself from his father. So he fakes his own murder and flees to James Island. There he finds Mrs. Watson's slave, Jim, who was hiding out of fear that if anyone found him, they would sell him at the slave market. But they soon discover that people are coming to James Island to look for Jim. Jim considers fleeing to the Free State, a thought that troubles Huck's conscience. Even though Huck breaks the rules, Huck struggles with Jim's concept of slavery and freedom. Along the way, they met interesting characters like the Duke and the King.
