Essay / Chris, for example, liked being disconnected from society. He could go long periods of solitude without speaking to another human being and remain unfazed. Chris even called himself Alex as a symbol of not belonging to anyone. In an excerpt from the novel Into the Wild, when Gallien asked him whether or not he had a hunting license, Alex scoffed: “'Hell, no. What I feel is none of the government's business. Fuck their stupid rules’” (Krakauer 6). He had cast aside the regulations established in society and replaced them with his own rules carved out of his own morality. In a way, he doesn't want to be part of a society in which a man like his father achieved so much success and respect. He saw the inner workings and power of a man so high in his field; Walter could turn his house into a battlefield. Another wilderness dweller, Krakauer, reflected on what compelled him to engage in these life-threatening activities, something Chris never had the opportunity to do because his trip ended proved fatal. With a more experienced perception of reality, he writes: “At that time of my youth, death remained as abstract a concept as non-Euclidean geometry or marriage. who “entrusted their hearts to the deceased” (Krakauer 155). Chris didn't care enough about what the loss of his life might do to those who entrusted it to him, and neither did Krakauer when he intended to reach the summit of Devil's Thumb alone. These patterns are essential because they are another element that binds rioters under a common cause and can help us make an educated guess about who is most likely to join them.
