Essay / No more homework! - 759
Do you know why every student dreads the last five minutes of class more than the other seventy minutes? No? Well, it's really quite obvious; this is the time when homework is assigned. So why does this simple 8 letter word scare us? It's simple: if there was ever a more disastrous invention than the American atomic bomb, it was a duty. This can be defined as work specifically created to be done at home to prevent students from enjoying life outside of school. So I think it should only be assigned by a teacher in cases where it is no longer possible for students to learn in class. This is further reinforced by the limited guidance, stress and time constraints experienced at home. First, let's look at the limited advice available at home if an unhappy student has to complete complex assignments. Let's say hypothetically, although this situation occurs often; that a tenth grade class has just been given an assignment that requires a huge amount of research. The student with a high-speed Internet connection and an encyclopedia library has an unfair advantage over other students. Additionally, students might have questions about the assignment and teachers would be unable to resolve students' problems. This results in sloppy homework that benefits neither the student nor the teacher. In connection with the lack of resources in certain homes, there is also a lack of support from parents. In my primary school alone, there were a number of parents who were not very fluent in English. Our school has taken measures such as publishing the newsletter in different languages. If there are so many non-English speaking parents, why do schools assign so much homework, knowing full well that there may be no one at home to help them if a question arises? As for ordinary parents, not everyone can be expected to be familiar with the 12th grade math or 11th grade chemistry curriculum. Thus, one can understand why the limited guidance available to students at home would create a negative effect on a student's homework. Then, time constraints come into play when a student is given a huge amount of homework. Some who do unrestricted homework may find this hard to believe, but we humble students have a life. Many of us have part-time jobs, extra-circular activities, volunteering and general work to do..
