Essay / The serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer - 2515
IntroductionFrom 1987 to 1991, Jeffrey Dahmer reigned terror over the gay community. He was a socially inept gay man. He spent his entire life feeling excluded in this giant world and struggled to find his voice and his sense of self. He used dead rodents and mannequins to provide entertainment and companionship. Eventually, Dahmer craves more and when his alcohol abuse can no longer cure him, he lets his horrible fantasies and needs take control. Childhood and Adolescence Lionel and Joyce Dahmer gave birth to their first born, Jeffrey Dahmer, on May 21, 1960 in Milwaukee. Although Joyce had a difficult pregnancy, Dahmer was a healthy child, wanted and adored by both parents. However, his mother began to become distant with him as she refused to breastfeed him and began demonstrating unstable behavior as well as substance abuse. Meanwhile, his father was pursuing his doctorate in chemistry in Iowa, which limited the time Lionel had with his family. At the age of five, Dahmer's little brother was born and it was at this time that a feeling of abandonment set in within him. For the first time, his parents' little attention had to be shared with his brother David. Dahmer began to exhibit extreme shyness but also severe outbursts of anger. At the ages of six and seven, Dahmer "was considered strange and bizarre by other children (Martens, 2005)." Although he showed no interest in developing real social relationships, Dahmer demonstrated a fascination with insect and animal dissections. When Dahmer was six years old, he had "undergone an operation for a hernia, when he woke up from anesthesia he was afraid that someone might cut off his genitals, the pain lasted a week and after a long period of convalescence, his parents remember that he had become very lonely (Giannetakis, nd). It is believed that at the age of eight, Dahmer was sexually assaulted by a boy in his neighborhood (Hickey, 2013). If this event happened, it could explain why he developed destructive sexual fantasies from the age of twelve. Although he was distant, it was reported that he sought attention by faking epileptic seizures at school and in local stores. As a teenager, he developed compulsive masturbation which got him into legal trouble (Silva, 2002). At the age of fourteen, Dahmer turned to alcohol abuse in order to overcome his feelings of hopelessness and compulsive thoughts of committing acts of sexual violence..
