  • Essay / What is Gender Equality Essay - 1281

Although we can see that women have the same rights as men in most circumstances, there is still a gender norm who controls how each gender should act. Women have fought for their rights and achieved success, but gender norms still prevent them from freely enjoying what men enjoy. Our society has been governed by these gender norms that help control how each of us, men and women, should live. These gender norms guide us throughout our lives as men and women. When we are born, we are able to see our gender as it is displayed by someone else and we also learn how we should act. These gender norms help guide how we live our lives and what we do with ourselves and help us make our decisions when we are uncertain. By educating ourselves, gender norms are visible throughout the education system, as men and women learn what is acceptable for each gender and how we should act. If we act outside of these gender norms, we are considered deviant and different. At school we learn, as men and women, what courses we should take and how to behave as men and women.
