When neglect happens to children, it can change their lives. Each case of negligence is different from person to person. For the children of the Walls, neglect was daily. Online at Dictionary.com, neglect means not paying attention or not enough; careless or light. In her memoir The Glass Castle, Jeannette Walls and her siblings were neglected by Rosemary and Rex Walls emotionally, medically, and physically. No matter what type of abuse one may experience, they all have lasting effects and have affected people from very different backgrounds. The Walls' children faced medical neglect at the hands of Rosemary and Rex Walls. Medical neglect means the failure to provide adequate medical or dental care to their child. Jeanette was only three years old when she cooked hot dogs on the stove unsupervised. Furthermore, her favorite dress caught fire and burned Jeanette from the stomach to the face. Afterwards, Rosemary grabbed Brian and Jeannette and rushed to the nearby trailer. Doctors said Jeannette was lucky to be alive. Additionally, Rex should never have taken Jeannette out of the hospital without signing the waiver... middle of paper... on the return trip. Rosemary didn't usually cook much. So once the beans went bad, Lori, Brian, and Jeannette would add extra spice to them. In this case, a parent leaving their children to fend for themselves is emotional neglect. The Walls' children may grow up feeling like Rosemary never took care of them, which can lead to low self-esteem and behavioral problems. Finally, Rosemary decides that Maureen should enroll in preschool. In this case, Rosemary didn't want Maureen to be dressed in thrift store clothes like the rest of the Walls family. Rosemary told Lori, Brian and Jeannette that they should shoplift. This is clearly a violation of the law and negatively influences the morality of these young minds. Lori, Brian and Jeannette were nervous and afraid of getting caught for something wrong, which they are forced to do..
