Essay / Analysis of The Birthmark and My Last Duchess - 1574
“The Birthmark” and “My Last Duchess” are two very different works, from two completely different genres. “The Birthmark” is a short story written by Nathaniel Hawthorne and “My Last Duchess” is a poem written by Robert Browning. Although they are two different genres, they have very similar themes and parallels. These works explore issues of power and control in marriages in two different times and places and show what this can drive a man to do. “The Birthmark” has a lot of symbolism, imagery, and allegory. This story is about a fairly normal newlywed couple, Aylmer and Georgiana. “So such a union took place and had truly remarkable consequences and profoundly impressive morals. (2) » This quote is very interesting because the word “union” means many things. From one point of view, this may mean the marriage between Aylmer and Georgiana, and on the other hand, it could refer to the union of Aylmer's love for Georgiana and science. Aylmer devotes himself entirely to his scientific career and he recently married Georgiana. So he's just beginning to discover what marriage is like. The birthmark is the conflict in their marriage and in the story, Aylmer does not like Georgiana's birthmark and he asks her to allow him to remove it. He soon realizes that removing the birthmark is not as simple as it seems because it is inseparable from Georgiana's face. Georgiana then allows Aylmer to remove the birthmark, even though she knows he is not a talented scientist. The liquid Aylmer makes Georgiana drink slowly kills her, and Aylmer proves himself to be a complete fool. The birthmark itself is the main symbol used throughout the story. "My Last Duchess" is a poem about a duke who shows someone ...... the middle of a paper ...... with his request to remove it. Hawthorne and Browning chose two different developments and extremes of their works. Hawthorne chose to be more subtle in his approach to controlling Aylmer and Georgiana's marriage. On the other hand, Browning chose a harsher approach to control between the Duke and his final Duchess. Regardless of the approach taken, both authors addressed a similar theme: power and control. In conclusion, even though these two works ended in death, they still represent two completely different genres with a common theme. Two different approaches resulted in the same theme that was sustained throughout the poem and short story. Without this aspect of the story, there would be no story. Because without these themes there is no conflict in the poem or short story, and without conflict it leaves a very boring plot..
