The subject of war in poetry of different periods Dulce e Decorum is by Wilfred Owen, Suicide In the Trenches by Siegfried Sassoon and The Charge of the Light Brigade by Alfred Tennyson.From studying the selection of texts (Poetry and Prose), what have you learned about the different way in which writers from different eras approach the subject of war. The three poems I chose to talk about are “Dulce e Decorumest” by Wilfred Owen, “Suicide In the Trenches” by Siegfried Sassoon, and “The Charge of the Light Brigade” by Alfred Tennyson. I will look at the three poems, different views on war and how they compare and contrast with each other. I will also consider how the poet's background may affect their opinions. The poets come from a similar period but with different points of view. “Suicide In The Trenches” and “Dulce e Decorum est” date from the First World War and “The Charge of The Light Brigade” form the Crimean War. Alfred Tennyson, Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen all come from different backgrounds, which changes the way they write and the way they express their opinions. Tennyson was a wealthy public school student, proud of Britain's conquests around the world, but never fought himself, and therefore had no experience of first-person combat. . Owen contrasts this as he did not have much wealth and was just a common soldier. Sassoon was an army officer, but he was still quite wealthy and never got a taste for trench warfare during World War I. This shows right away that the three writers were all raised with different viewpoints and backgrounds, which would definitely affect the way they write. The way Tennyson writes is that of a man who never... middle of paper... ...The Crimean War did not change history, but Britain did nevertheless suffered terrible human losses. Tennyson and the rest of Britain were not used to this, so Tennyson wrote about the subject of war in a very positive way. Owen and Sassoon lived through the Great War and witnessed first-hand the terrible losses. Instead of showing how well Britain was doing, they wrote about how people were dying innocently. At the time Owen and Sassoon were writing, Britain faced an uncertain future and Owensand Sassoon's poem complements this aspect of life. They both try to convey truth and reality in their poems. World War I brought writers like Sassoon and Owen to write in this style. Unlike Tennyson, they highlighted all the negatives and stayed true to the point.
